- use extension leads only on a temporary basis.
- examine leads (appliance and extension leads) regularly for signs of wear and tear and damage to insulation.
- ensure all extension leads are protected by a 13A fuse.
- unplug all non-essential electrical appliances when not in use.
- only use extension leads that have been listed by a recognized certification organization (CE).
- unplug the appliance and call an electrician if the receptacle faceplate feels hot or if there is sparking, smoke or odor coming from the outlet, plug or appliance.
- fix down extension leads with hazard / tape when running across floor areas to prevent trip hazards.
DON'T...
- interconnect more than 3 extension leads (i.e. daisy chain).
- connect large items (such as printersz) to extension leads; instead connect them directly to a wall socket.
- fix extension leads with nails or staples.
- use extension leads that are worn or damaged.
- put extension leads under rugs or in high traffic areas and don't rest anything on an extension cord.
- place extension leads near water; e.g. sinks, water boilers etc.
- place cables so that they may come in contact with hot surfaces.
- ignore switches or receptacle outlets that don't work seek the help of a qualified electrician or dispose of extension lead.
- let extension leads hang over tables or countertops where persons can pull an appliance off or plugs might become loose
